I love contouring: it’s by far my favourite cosmetic technique, and I do it on a daily basis without fail. I’ve tried all sorts of products for this – including Kat Von D, budget-friendly Sleek and the Holy Grail that is Anastasia Beverly Hills – but my go-to has to be the Clinique Chubby Contour Stick (which I reviewed here).
However, when my Chubby Stick died a death earlier this month, I decided to try and save some pennies and find a cheaper alternative (because poverty). When browsing Beauty Bay, I came across L.A Girl Velvet Bronzer Sticks, which looked suspiciously similar. Purchasing ‘Suede’ (the most Clinique-esque of the choices, according to my computer monitor), I was super keen to get this through the letterbox…
I’ll be honest: I’d never heard of L.A Girl, but for a fiver, it’s not to be sniffed at. I’ll admit though – when it arrived, I was a bit disappointed. The contour stick was quite a bit shorter than I thought, and the packaging looks pretty cheap and drugstore-esque (plastic + gold lettering does not exactly scream luxe. BUT IT’S A FIVER SO SHUT UP.)
But hey – appearances can be deceiving. I cracked it open and applied it how I would my Clinique version: a swipe across the forehead, down the cheekbones and either side of the nose – then buffed it out with my Morphe blending brush. Simple.
Results-wise? It’s okay. The consistency felt basically the same as Clinique’s, but the formula was a lot less pigmented; once buffed out, it didn’t really seem to have made as much of an impact, especially when I’d dusted a powder over the top. I do prefer my Clinique contour stick, but for £15 more I’m not planning on binning the L.A Girl version any time soon; maybe I’m just a creature of habit?
Whilst I’m not raving about it, it wasn’t bad at all – I think I’ve been spoilt in the past with the much more luxurious Clinique equivilant. If you’re new to contouring, or don’t want to spend much, definitely try the L.A Girl Velvet Bronzer out – after all, what have you go to lose? – but it might leave you a little cold if you’re used to using higher-end products. #SpoiltBrat.
