KYLIE JENNER LIP KIT REVIEW

The basic bitch checklist goes something like this: Starbucks frappucino. Cartier love bangles. Fiat 500. And finally, a Kylie Jenner lip kit…

Given how much of a fan of the Kardashians I am, it’s actually a bit surprising that I’ve not caved in and bought a Kylie Jenner Lip Kit by now. They’re kind of old news, really – there’s no need to refresh the page every thirty seconds to ensure you get one, or check Kylie’s snapchat for release dates; you can just buy one off Kylie Cosmetics in minutes. #exclusive.

I’d read the crap reviews, and watched all the videos of people saying how rubbish they were – but I still wanted one. Purely because of the Kylie branding (that marketing ploy seriously worked on me) so I took the plunge and bought the Dolce K Lip Kit and the Koko K Lip Kit, then sat back and waited for them to arrive…

If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know what a Kylie Jenner Lip Kit actually is, it’s a lip-liner pencil and matte liquid lipstick that will supposedly give you a pout to rival Kylie’s…

I ordered two shades – Koko K, which is a pale, pinky nude, and then Dolce K, a darker, browny nude shade. Choosing shades was tricky, because the swatches look different on every skin tone – obviously I’m not as dark as Kylie, so I had to scour Google images for a proper idea of which colours to buy.

The lip kits came together in a black box, with a Kylie branded postcard that waffled on about how this was a cosmetic journey we were going on together (right, okay), and each kit comes in white packaging with the melting lips branding on the front. I also really enjoyed Kylie’s “tips” on the back of the packaging – surely her tip should be “get lip fillers”? – and the ingredients and directions are also listed.

HOW MUCH ARE THE KYLIE LIP KITS?

So. This is quite a loaded question, because what I thought the answer would be turned out to be totally incorrect…

Each lip kit is $29, and then shipping is a whopping $14; so I ended up paying $72, which isn’t terrible given you get two lip-liners and two liquid lipsticks, which if you bought them separately, would probably cost more. HOWEVER. The fun didn’t end there. Checking my bank statement a few days after, I had been charged £3 for a transatlantic charge. Super. Oh, and then…

WILL I HAVE TO PAY IMPORT DUTY ON MY KYLIE LIP KIT?

…yes. Yes, you will. I got a card through the door saying there was a SIXTEEN POUNDS import fee to pay before my lip kits would be released. So at this point, I’d paid about £70 for these bloody things, and I didn’t even know if the colours would suit me. I paid the extortionate import duty and finally got to see what they were like…

DOLCE K

In this picture, I quite like Dolce K, but in reality, I don’t think it suits me very well. It’s that kind of dusty, cappuccino brown that would suit someone with a darker skin tone – I think it made my lips look actually quite small because it was a bit too dark.

KOKO K

Kind of the other way round with this one – the picture makes it look a bit crap, but I much preferred this shade on me. It’s a nice blush pink that suits my paler skin tone, and even though it was lighter than Dolce K, it lasted all night long.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

I’m not a huge fan of the lip-liners, as they’re very creamy and not particularly pigmented, and they smudge quite easily – I wear liner by itself usually, but don’t feel I could do that with these. The matte liquid lipstick is quite thin, as you can see from Koko K, so you need a few layers to build up the colour to avoid it looking streaky; it applies fairly well, like any other liquid lipstick, and dries matte in about a minute. (Weirdly, there’s no suction in the tube – the wand just slides out, so be careful not to spill the product).

They do last – I wore Koko K out for drinks and didn’t need to top up. They’re a bugger to get off, too, so you’ll need a good makeup remover and several cotton pads to get these off your lips.

I like these; they’re alright. But just alright, if I’m being honest. I wouldn’t pay the zillion pounds again, and I won’t repurchase them, but I like them now I’ve got them – if that makes sense? I’d say try them, but either buy a couple to make the shipping fee worth it, or get a couple of friends together and split the costs – it’s definitely time to be thrifty…
