I am a sucker for a contour palette. Thanks to my doughy face and love of cake, I’m not blessed with a particularly razor-sharp set of cheekbones;  frankly, I need all the help I can get.

The Kat Von D Shade & Light Contour Palette appeared in my post box a few weeks ago, and I’ve been trying it out ever since. I’ll be honest – I originally really wanted to try the Anastasia Beverly Hills one, and hadn’t really heard of the Kat Von D beauty brand.

However, after watching a few (read: zillions) of YouTube videos, I found that most bloggers were raving about Kat, and not so enamoured with Anastasia; when asked to choose a contour kit, I therefore plumped for Kat Von D’s Shade & Light instead.

Packaging wise, this palette is massive. It feels hefty and solid, and you get a pretty decent amount of product in each pan, although you get considerably more contour shade than highlight shade. (This doesn’t faze me particularly, as I use the Ben Nye Banana Powder to highlight anyway – I feel like these highlighting shades will act as backups.)

Pigmentation is great in this palette. I like how the contour shades are considerably more ashy than in others – I often find I can look a bit Oompa-Loompa when using a kit. I actually got a bit over zealous when loading up my brush with powder, and looked a bit muddy the first time; however, with a bit of practice, my contour was most certainly on point.

Now. I like this palette. I really do. However, I just don’t love it, and I can’t really put my finger on why. I still can’t bring myself to adore powder contouring – I much prefer cream products, as I find them considerably easier to blend, and if I make a mistake it’s easier to rectify.

I think this palette is lovely, and a nice addition to your beauty kit, but I can’t really rave too much about it. I think it’s good quality, with nicely milled powders which have great colour, but to me, it’s just fallen a little bit flat…

Have you tried Kat Von D? Do you prefer powder or cream contour?

  1. I’ve been wanting to try this as I’ve seen many rave about it as well. I do own the anastasia one (powder version) and I don’t like it. I’ve felt the kat von d one at sephora and it’s much more softer than the anastasia one. I only finished the vanilla shade of the palette the others remain untouched lol.
